Ask about the escape path
Before a tree is felled, someone should have cleared a path away from the fall line so the cutter can walk out of the way. Ask the crew where that path will be on your lot. Ask too how the saw operator stands while cutting. The right answer is firm footing and a two-handed grip on the saw. If you get a shrug or a vague answer, move on to the next crew.
The chipper tells you a lot
Watch how a crew runs the chipper. It should have guards and emergency stops, and nobody should stand in the in-feed chute area. Material gets fed in, never pushed with hands or feet. A worker who is shoving brush in with a boot is taking a risk, and that kind of shortcut rarely stays limited to the chipper.
Climbing work and cabling
Anyone going up into a tree should be wearing a safety harness and saddle. Ask about it directly, since cabling is aloft work and not a ground job. Cabling runs $200 to $400 per tree. With the wind and heavy rain we get in Rockledge, a tree that needs support is worth pricing before the next storm instead of after it. Get the price per tree in writing so you can compare crews line by line.
Stump removal pricing
Stump removal runs from $90 to $1200 per stump, and that spread is wide enough that a verbal number means little. Ask for a written price for each stump, and ask whether it covers grinding only or also covers cleanup of the chips. A crew that quotes you a single flat figure for every stump on the lot hasn't looked at them.
Comparing two quotes
Get at least two written quotes and read them side by side. The better one names the work on each tree, states the price per tree or per stump, and answers the escape path and chipper questions without hedging. If one quote is a single line with a total, ask the crew to break it out before you sign.

The Job, Done Right
Our crew does the work, checks it, and leaves the site clean. You see everything we did.
Some of what that looks like in the field:
- Use chipper guards and emergency stops, stay clear of the in-feed chute, and never push material into the machine with hands or feet.
- Walk the site before work and identify power lines, damaged limbs, tree lean, nearby structures or traffic, and unstable ground.
Common Questions
Demand often drops in late fall and winter, which can lower rates within the normal $200–$5,000 range. Mild weather also lets crews work safely without ice or summer foliage blocking access. Booking during slower months may reduce wait times as well.
An unground stump can regrow, attract insects, create tripping hazards, and interfere with mowing or landscaping. Stump removal costs $90–$1,200 depending on size and root depth. Grinding below grade allows soil and grass to be restored over the area.
Hourly rates are uncommon; most jobs are bid by the tree. When charged hourly, expect figures that contribute to the overall $200–$5,000 removal range. Crew size, equipment, and job complexity determine the final total more than an hourly meter.
